A chlorine injector can appear to be operating normally while delivering little or no chlorine solution. The hydraulic motor may still click, but an air leak, blocked strainer, worn injection seal, contaminated suction valve, or damaged hose can prevent accurate chemical draw.

The most efficient troubleshooting method is therefore not to dismantle the entire injector. Start with what the unit is doing:

  1. Is the injector clicking?
  2. Is chlorine solution moving up the suction hose?
  3. Is water flowing backward into the chemical tank?
  4. Is the delivered concentration consistent with the selected dosing setting?

These observations separate a hydraulic motor problem from a chemical suction or injection problem.

The procedures and specifications below are based on the D14 Water Line owner’s manual. Always verify the complete model reference stamped on your injector before ordering parts or performing model-specific maintenance.

How a Water-Powered Chlorinator Works

A Dosatron injector is installed directly in the water line and uses water pressure as its power source. Water passing through the unit drives a hydraulic motor piston. The connected dosing assembly draws concentrated chlorine solution through the suction hose and introduces it into the water stream.

The quantity of concentrate injected is proportional to the volume of water passing through the unit, provided that the injector is operated within its specified flow and pressure range and the suction and dosing components are functioning correctly. The D14WL does not require an external electrical power supply.

A characteristic click-clack sound indicates that the hydraulic motor is cycling. It does not, by itself, confirm that chlorine solution is being drawn or that the intended concentration is being delivered.

Quick Chlorinator Troubleshooting Decision Tree

1. Is the injector clicking?
  • No: Check water flow, valve position, inlet and outlet orientation, upstream filtration, trapped air, and the motor piston.
  • Yes: Continue to the suction test.
2. Is chlorine solution moving up the suction hose?
  • No: Inspect the chemical level, suction hose, hose connection, strainer, suction valve, plunger piston, and dosing seal.
  • Yes: Continue to the backflow check.
3. Is water flowing down the suction hose and into the chemical tank?
  • Yes: Inspect and clean the suction valve and its sealing components. Replace damaged components.
  • No: Continue to dosage verification.
4. Is the injector drawing chemical but producing the wrong concentration?
  • Verify the dosing adjustment.
  • Look for air bubbles in the suction hose.
  • Inspect the suction hose and injection seals.
  • Confirm that the chemical is suitable for the injector’s installed seal package.
  • Measure the treated-water concentration using an appropriate test method.

Before Servicing the Chlorinator

Chlorine products can be corrosive or otherwise hazardous. Follow the chemical manufacturer’s safety information and the injector owner’s manual before handling the equipment.

Before opening the injector:

  1. Shut off the water supply.
  2. Relieve all pressure inside the unit.
  3. Wear suitable protective gloves, clothing, and eye protection.
  4. Rinse the injector before handling it.
  5. Prevent uncontrolled contact with the chemical solution.
  6. Work in front of the injector rather than directly above it.
  7. Do not use metallic utensils on injector components.
  8. Hand-tighten the injector assemblies unless the manual specifically instructs otherwise.

The D14WL manual states that the system must be depressurized before adjustment and that rinsing is required when changing chemicals and before handling the injector.

Problem 1: The Chlorinator Is Not Clicking

The directional arrows molded or marked on the injector body must match the direction of water flow through the pipeline. An injector installed backward will not operate correctly.

Corrective action > Confirm the direction of flow and correct the installation if necessary.

Problem #2: The Injector Is Clicking and Water Is Entering the Chemical Tank

The check valve prevents water from flowing back into the chemical tank.

Inspect for:

  • Debris
  • Chemical deposits
  • Seal damage
  • Excessive wear

Corrective action >Clean components thoroughly or replace worn parts using the appropriate maintenance kit.

Problem #3: The Injector Is Not Clicking

The owner's manual recommends checking piston flanges for:

  • Scratches
  • Excessive wear
  • Physical damage
  • Loose fit within the housing

Damaged piston components can prevent proper hydraulic movement.

Corrective action > Replace worn piston assemblies using a genuine Dosatron replacement kit.

Problem #4: Injection Rate Appears Inaccurate

Dosatron injectors are not factory preset.

Verify that:

  • The dosage adjustment is correctly set.
  • The selected dilution ratio matches treatment requirements.

Changes to the setting should only be made when the system is depressurized.

Problem #5: Frequent Maintenance Issues

The owner's manual recommends installing a filtration system upstream of the injector.

Without filtration:

  • Sand
  • Scale
  • Suspended solids
  • Abrasive particles

can accelerate wear of internal components and reduce injector lifespan.
