Avian influenza outbreaks (and various other viral, bacterial or parasitic pathologies) in domestic birds are of particular concern for several reasons:
- The evolution of the low-pathogenic virus into a highly pathogenic form and its rapid spread
- A severe form of the virus with a mortality rate of 90-100% within as little as 48 hours
- Economic losses and trade restrictions associated with an outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI).
One of the most important biosecurity measures is transport, a potential contamination factor that is often overlooked by livestock farmers.
